 QUICK GUIDE: JAPAN

Location: East Asia

Best Time to Visit: March to May (spring) & October to November (autumn)

Currency: Japanese Yen (JPY)

Language: Japanese (English is spoken in major cities and tourist areas)

Time Zone: GMT +9

TOP THINGS TO DO:

Tokyo: Discover futuristic cityscapes, shopping in Shibuya, historic temples in Asakusa, and vibrant nightlife in Shinjuku.

Kyoto: Immerse yourself in traditional Japan—explore ancient temples, serene gardens, geisha districts, and tea ceremonies.

Osaka: Enjoy Japan’s street food capital with lively markets, Osaka Castle, and Universal Studios Japan.

Mount Fuji & Hakone: Take in breathtaking views of Mt. Fuji and unwind in hot spring resorts (onsen) near Hakone.

Hiroshima: Visit the Peace Memorial Park and Museum, and take a ferry to the sacred Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island.

Nikko or Nara (day trips): Explore stunning shrines, friendly deer parks, and scenic countryside escapes.

CULTURAL TIPS:

Bowing is a traditional greeting and sign of respect.

Always remove shoes before entering homes, some temples, and traditional inns (ryokan).

Japan values cleanliness—carry a small towel and be mindful of public hygiene.

Public displays of affection are uncommon.

Tipping is not customary and may even be refused.

Trains are punctual and quiet—keep phone use minimal and voices low.

WHEN TO TRAVEL:

Best Time:

Spring (March to May) – Famous for cherry blossoms (sakura), mild weather, and beautiful parks.

Autumn (October to November) – Cool temperatures and vibrant fall foliage.

Summer (June to August): Hot and humid, but packed with festivals (matsuri) and fireworks. Great for mountain hiking and beach visits in Okinawa. Note: June is Japan’s rainy season.

Winter (December to February): Ideal for skiing in Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps, enjoying snow-covered temples, and soaking in hot springs.

Golden Week (late April–early May): A major national holiday season with high travel volume—book early if visiting during this time.
